Educational Technology and Copyright Law

  • I learned that copyright is a law that states your original work is immediately, "yours." For example, you draw a picture, create a poem, or even write songs, it is automatically copyrighted as yours.
  • Technically, anyone can use your works. If the work was to be use in an educational way, teachers can use it, and fair use is met.
  • However, many photos online are licensed and are not able to use in public. For example, if you happen to like a photo on Flickr, you must credit the photographer. Or, iStockPhoto requires users to buy a license to use it in public.
  • In order to use a photo, you must make sure the photo is not licensed.
  • If you happen to find a non-licensed photo, remember to credit the photographer.
